With the Validation Snip, you can indicate that data in a document is correct according to your professional judgement.
Creating a new Validation Snip in an empty target cell uses a green V; converting a Text Snip in an already-populated cell keeps the existing text, date or number and applies the green styling in that same cell. Conversion resets the Excel number format to General, which can display a date as a serial number. Select the same cell, open Format Cells and reapply the required date or number format. The original value, document link and green Validation Snip styling remain together in that cell.
About Snipping
With DataSnipper for Excel you can cross-reference Excel with supporting evidence, like PDFs, images, MS Word and Excel files. The references are stored in the workbook, making it very easy to review audit procedures.
Setting a Validation Snip
Click the Validation Snip button to activate it.
Select the cell that you want to link to the document.
Drag a rectangle around the relevant location on the document.
The tick mark that appears in the cell is now linked to the rectangle on the document.
Use the Validation Snip for all kinds of audit procedures, such as minute reviews, checklists, tests of detail, walkthroughs, tests of controls, and contract reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Can you edit the tick mark entered in Excel when you use the Validation Snip?
For a new Validation Snip in a new or empty target cell, the default mark is a green V. The default mark cannot be changed, but after the snip is created you can edit the cell content, colour, font and font size without breaking its link to the document. Excel Find and Replace can update Validation Snip cell contents.
Converting a Text Snip to a Validation Snip preserves the existing cell value. It does not replace that value with V: V is only the default for a new or empty target cell. The original date, number or text and the Validation Snip’s green styling can remain together in the same cell; there is no need to move the value to another cell.
If a date or number displays as a serial number or changes appearance after conversion, the underlying value is still preserved. Conversion applies the snip style and resets Excel’s number format to General. Select the same cell and reapply the desired date or number format in Format Cells. This fixes the display while keeping both the original value and Validation Snip styling.
