How to create and use custom Agents with DataSnipper Agent Builder - Walkthrough procedure
Learn how to turn your audit and finance workflows into reusable, custom agents
What is Agent Builder?
Agent Builder turns your audit and finance workflows into custom agents your whole team can run. Instead of starting from scratch every time, you describe a procedure once, including the steps, logic, and decisions behind it and Agent Builder captures it as a reusable agent that executes the same way every time.
Once created, agents can be shared across engagements and used directly in Excel through Excel Agents. The result is consistent, high-quality work with explainable, traceable outputs and your best way of working becomes available to everyone.
Note: Agent Builder is not a prompt library. Each agent is a full custom workflow with structured capabilities and guardrails, allowing it to execute complete procedures end to end.

Step-by-step tutorial
- On the DataSnipper platform, open Agents and click Build an Agent.
- Give the Agent a clear name and short description. Example: "Purchases and Payables walkthrough agent — Performs the test of design and implementation walkthrough over the Purchases and Payables (Procure-to-Pay) cycle for a year-end audit."
- In Goals, state the outcome the Agent should achieve. Example: "Complete the Purchases & Payables walkthrough working paper from the supplied evidence and reach a clear conclusion on whether key controls are designed and implemented effectively."
- In Behavior, set the guardrails the Agent should follow. Example: Cite specific evidence for every finding, stay within the template, and add a snip for every value entered.
- In Instructions, list the steps the Agent should execute in order. Example: Read the evidence package end-to-end, populate each tab of the working paper (Process Understanding, Sample, Test of Design, Test of Implementation, Evidence Inventory), and write the Conclusion and Planned Audit Response.
- Change Status to Published and set Available to (e.g., Organization) so your team can use the Agent. Publishing and sharing Agents firm-wide depends on your assigned role. To learn who can publish, share, and access Agents, see the article.
- Open your walkthrough workpaper in Excel, import the supporting documents (PR, PO, GRN, Invoice, Approval Voucher and Bank/Wire confirmation) into the DataSnipper Document Viewer, and click the Excel Agent icon in the DataSnipper Ribbon.
- Select your Agent from the panel and prompt it to execute. Example: Select "Purchases and Payables walkthrough agent" and enter "Execute the agent."
- The Agent reads the workpaper, creates snips, executes the defined steps, and writes the output back to your Excel sheets. Example: It populates process owners and sampled transaction details from the source documents, records the design and implementation assessment for each control with linked evidence snips, and writes the conclusion.
- Review the output, check the snips and citations for traceability, and apply your professional judgement before sign-off.
